Driving around St Barts
A French Overseas Territory, all drivers on St Barts must adhere to French traffic laws. As such, driving is on the right hand side of the road with a maximum speed is 50kph; seatbelts are also required. Drivers must be in possession of either a French or international driver's license.
Granted the island is small and there are no highways or major intersections, you can drive from one end of the island to the next in 20 minutes or so. There are only two gas stations here, and both are closed on Sundays. You can fill the tank near the airport, this location is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30am-12pm and from 2-7pm. This location also has an all-night automatic pump that usually accepts MasterCard and Visa credit cards. The second gas station is located in Lorient and opens from 7:30am-12pm and 2-5pm.
However, driving here can still be quite an experience, with tight 2-lane roads and blind corners announced by signage of no words, just an exclamation point. Also, unless you're comfortable driving up and down some steep hills with ease in a standard car, we suggest renting an automatic car. Be sure to slow down and don't let tailgate motorbikes and scooters. If parking roadside, be sure to pull in your driver's side rear-view mirror.
