Of all the destinations around the world, the delightful island of St Barts in the Caribbean is without doubt a favourite.
St Barts, or St Barthélémy as it is officially known, is a charming island which is becoming increasingly popular as a luxury destination. The French overseas territory, which measures just eight miles, is the smallest of the islands that comprise the French West Indies, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in style.
St Barts is known fondly as the French Riviera of the Caribbean with its white sandy beaches, azure blue sea and a string of exclusive boutiques, first-class restaurants and five-star hotels.
And it is not surprising, considering its French roots, that many of the restaurants on St Barts serve excellent French cuisine, some of the best of which are listed below.
Sante Fe, Route de Lurin, 97133 Saint-Barthélémy
For arguably the best coq au vin on the island, head to this exceptional restaurant just outside Gustavia. The kitchen is run by French chef Emmanuel Maurin and the food is delicious. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner every day apart from Wednesday. It is closed annually between September 1st and October 15th.
Les Bananiers, Route de Colombiers, 97133 St Barthélémy
For simple French cuisine head to this popular restaurant on the hillside in Colombier, not far from Gustavia, the capital of St Barts. The food is traditional French: think fresh grilled fish, tuna tartar and perfectly cooked filet of beef.
Maya’s, Plage de Public, 97133 St Barthélémy
French chef Maya was born in Martinique, grew up in Guadeloupe and was educated in France, and her multi-cultural background shines through in her delicious cooking. The restaurant overlooks Gustavia Harbor and is hugely popular so be sure to book well in advance to secure the best table on the terrace.
